It is so important to protect your family from Toxic Food Additives.

Hopefully you are aware of the perils that are hiding on the shelves of our grocery stores.  If you are like me you make a point to not allow junk food items into your home.  Or maybe you do because you don’t know any better.  That is OK though; living healthy  is a learning experience and if you are dedicated and care about your health and your family’s health you can and will overcome the junk!  So don’t start saying “I can’t” or “it’s too overwhelming”, just take little baby steps and everyday try to eliminate one bad thing from your diet and before you know it you will be on the road to a healthier more vibrant you!

There are so many ingredients that are absolutely toxic for us and cause all sorts of health issues but for the sake of this article and the next one that will follow, I will stick to just 2 of these evil offenders.

As a side note.  For those of you interested in the full list I will soon make available a La Chica Organica exclusive eBook entitled “Food The New Poison – What on Earth am I Eating”. So stay tuned.

I so dislike being the whistle-blower but someone’s got to say something.

Drum roll please……

Let’s start with MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) a widely used flavor enhancer.  Used in everything from so-called healthy chips to jello to that cheap noodle soup in a cup millions of Americans consume daily.  It can also be found in infant formulas and things that are labeled as Organic.

So what is the big deal anyway?  You see, MSG is an excitotoxin, which is a substance that overexcites your neurons to the point of cell damage and, eventually, cell death.  It has been known to cause serious asthma attacks in children, severe migraines, heart palpitations, obesity, hyperactivity in children and the list goes on and on.  Meanwhile we are drugging our kids for ADD and ADHD without even thinking that MSG removal from their diet can possibly eliminate the problem.

Now that you know enough, take a break from reading this article and watch this excellent report done by 60 Minutes, then when you are done come back.

Did it surprise you that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) classified MSG as a food ingredient and has deemed it “generally recognized as safe.” Now why on earth would they say that?  Here is why:
By FDA definition, all MSG is “naturally occurring.” “Natural” doesn’t mean “safe.”  “Natural” only means that the ingredient started out in nature.

Aha, now that is comforting.  So because petroleum is naturally occurring I can make a food product laced with petroleum and call it food because after all it’s naturally occurring.  I don’t know about you but that just scares me.

So what’s a person to do?

Be a mafia super spy, that’s what.  OK I am obviously over-exaggerating but you get the point.  You almost have to take on a mafia mentality to protect yourself these days.  My best advice to you is to read EVERYTHING.  And if you come across some ingredients in the labels you don’t understand then pick up a copy of this book entitled A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives

It will help you understand every ingredient in food today, where it came from what it does etc..  This book is truly amazing.  We often take it with us to the store believe it or not.

  2. Hello!
    I’ve got a few questions….
do you mean that soy sauce, miso, yeast and parmesan cheese ( and all types of “old” cheeses) should be banned completely? I also use vegetable stock, without extra MSG added to it….is that save to use?
    Kind regards
    Antwerp, Belgium

    • Hello,

Well, if they contain MSG then yes by all means they should be avoided. In our case we eat cheese sparingly but when we do we only consume raw organic cheese that is rich in amino-acids, probiotics and living enzymes.
Vegetable stock should be from organic vegetables and contain a bit or pure sea salt and organic herbs of your choice for added benefit and flavor, but should not contain MSG.
      Hope this helps.
Many Blessings – I see your from Belgium. I hope to visit someday as it was one of my fathers favorite countries to live in. 🙂
