I often get emails asking me how I got into health and wellness, herbal medicine and crafting organic products. So here is a little bit about LCO and some of the services I offer.
My passion for health and helping people started from when I was a little girl. I always enjoyed making teas, working with plants, planting, harvesting and being covered in dirt. LOL
Part of my journey began almost 10 years ago when my firstborn was diagnosed with severe asthma and allergies and ended up in a hospital for 6 weeks and then underwent a surgery. He was not even 2 at the time.
I had exhausted all my efforts to keep him healthy and he was on over 5 meds a day and took many antibiotics just in his first year of life. Deep down inside, I knew something was wrong with the amount of medicines he was taking; I knew that doing breathing treatments every 4 hours for weeks was not the answer. So I started to delve deep into research and into my past. A past of herbs, natural foods and living alongside nature. Once armed with the courage, inspiration and determination, I started to do my own case studies on my son and our world was changed forever with what I found out. During this process I could not help but remember as a little girl being told to run out into the garden to cut oregano, peppermint and any other herb that was to be used in my grandma’s kitchen. This thought remained in the back of my head for many years.
After my awakening regarding my son’s health I was on a mission to go back to eating healthier things. Not just for him but for me too. You see there is a story I am not telling you here about a painful condition I had a few yrs before my son was born that required surgery but I did a fruit and vegetable fast for about 6 months and started making little changes and this issue along with my severe constipation cleared up. My perils led me to become a health and wellness research specialist.
Little by little I was beginning to see all the nasty secrets of the pharmaceutical industry, our health system and the overall medical approach regarding health. My studies led me to discover the truth behind toxic chemicals in food, infant formula, makeup, sanitary napkins, clothes, baby wash, nail polish, antibiotics, cosmetics and everything in between.
During this time I also discovered that nutrient based therapy for many diseases is safe, effective and inexpensive. But that’s the whole point! It’s so good and so easy to use nature for healing that it makes NO $$$ for Big Pharma and medical professionals, so you will most likely not hear about it from your doctor. You can’t patent nature, God created everything in nature and he holds the only patent! So because you cant patent nature, most health care professionals wont bother with nature alternatives!
In discovering these truths I was shocked, appalled, disgusted and saddened. I knew I had to do something……that something evolved into La Chica Organica and later into making my own line of facial cleansers, organic herbal tea mixes, healing balms, salves, diaper rash creams, herbal baths and more. After all I started making them out of love for my own family to ensure we were getting the very best organic products.
Everything I teach people to make and those things that I make myself are all with one thought in mind: “If I can’t use them for our children then it’s not good for anyone else”.
That is why my commitment to health is of utmost importance to me; so I make sure that La Chica Organica’s herbal creations DO NOT CONTAIN petro-chemicals, sodium lauryl sulfate, formaldehyde, mineral oils, parabens, PABA, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and synthetic fillers.
Making quality non toxic creations using all that God blessed the earth with, and educating people about natural solutions is essential to me because I never forgot my days as a little girl cutting herbs and pulling up potatoes while walking barefoot in the yard. That little girl became one of the most important aspects of La Chica Organica’s mission. Why? Well because that little girl represents all of us in our quest for a healthier and safer life. She is one of the reasons for why I do what I do.
That little girl can also be seen in the faces of thousands of poverty-stricken children around the world that die each day because of a lack of proper nutrition and knowledge of natural treatments. My desire is to equip people with life saving knowledge so that they can go out into the world and lead healthier happier lives and impact those that are suffering around them. If I can’t use my life experiences to help others then whats the point of going through hard times? In my lifetime and the life of my extended family I have encountered: cancer, arthritis, ADHD, asthma, allergies, black mold, chronic infections, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, diverticulitis, back injuries, disability, high blood pressure, constipation, burns, excema, psoriasis, chronic diaper rashes, parasites, depression, nursing, child-birth, multiple childhood illnesses, high fevers, hormonal issues, bad breath, anemia, bone loss, periodontal disease and many other issues to long to place here.
So, as I have gone through life and dealt with various health issues in my family and extended family I have sought to learn as much as I can about them and use all that God created to aid us in recovery and prevention.
But sharing all of this with you would not be complete if I did not mention who was responsible for awakening my curiosity for natural cures, organic foods and herbs. That would be my dear Papi, my dad who is probably strolling in a heavenly vineyard or dancing with the angels. My dad was taken from us because of medical malpractice, but his love, and teachings are alive and etched inside my heart. Dad, I know you would be proud!
It’s not easy, going through life altering events like loosing a loved one or battling with cancer. My life has been full of hard times, good times and suffering, but I have found that if we survive with grace and faith we can share with others what we learned and make the world a better place. That is what I strive to do with each class I teach, with each product I make and with each article I write.
It saddens me when I see people who claim to be health gurus and experts but they have no love for people. Some of them are new to health & wellness but they lie claiming to have years and years of experience, all in an effort to build a deceptive business and take your money.
LCO is not one of those people. Being a health advocate is something I take very seriously, whether it is making an organic diaper rash balm or teaching people about healthier eating. All is the same to me. My motto is that we should live our life everyday as a gift and then give that gift away everyday. My passion for health is my gift, and that gift I give away to you and to others every single day!
And just for fun, the name La Chica Organica™ started as a joke from my husband when we were still dating. In English it means The Organic Chic. He and many of our friends know that in most cases if it’s not Organic and healthy I don’t want it, although I sometimes find my self having to make wise non organic choices, like when the family goes out to eat Greek Food or when we are visiting friends who don’t share my passion for wholesome organic food, but ultimately I pay the price with an upset stomach or some other irritating symptom. So I try to steer clear away from bad food unless it’s the only option and starvation does not win by popular vote. LOL (Laughing out Loud)
So now that you know a little bit more about LCO, here are some of the services we offer.

Health Benefits of Phytochemicals – Are You getting Enough?
22 May 2011 2 Comments
in Uncategorized Tags: cancer, health, Nutrition, Phytochemical
Phytonutrients, the chemicals that help plants defend against environmental challenges, such as damage from pests or ultraviolet light, appear to provide humans with protection as well. Mounting research shows their effectiveness in preventing and treating a range of conditions including everything from cancer and heart disease to diabetes and high blood pressure. But current law dictates that if anyone advertises health benefits without FDA approval, it is automatically considered an illegal health claim, even for everyday foods, such as walnuts.
Phytochemicals are thought to be responsible for much of the disease protection granted by diets high in fruits, vegetables, beans, cereals, and plant-based beverages such as tea and wine, according to a University of California, Davis report (http://chnr.ucdavis.edu/content/Fac…).
Although it has become widely accepted that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses, scientists have only recently begun researching the effects of the different phytonutrients those foods contain.
Previous evidence has come from observations of cultures that eat plant-based diets and have lower rates of certain types of cancer and heart disease. The relatively low rates of breast and endometrial cancers in some Asian cultures, for example, are credited partly to dietary habits. These cancers are much more common in the United States, possibly because the typical American diet is higher in fat and lower in fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains, according to American Cancer Society.
Many experts suggest that people can reduce their risk of cancer significantly by eating the foods that contain phytonutrients, according to American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/Treatment/Tre…). Evidence shows that they may work by helping to prevent the formation of potential carcinogens, blocking the action of carcinogens on their target organs or tissue, or acting on cells to suppress cancer development.
Research suggests that flavonoids, the most diverse group of phytochemicals, may be a key phytochemical group that contributes to the reduced mortality rates observed in people consuming high levels of plant-based foods, according to the UC Davis report. In the Zutphen Elderly Study, myocardial infarction was found to decrease as falvonoid intake increased. Similarly, the Seven Countries Study, which compared the diets of men living in various Western countries including the U.S., suggested that consumption of flavonoids was responsible for 25 percent of the observed difference in mortality rates in the different countries.
University of Minnesota Hormel Institute researchers say phytonutrients could be used in effective cancer prevention therapy, so much so that they eventually aim to develop phytochemical-derived anticancer drugs, Dr. Sigang Dong told The Austin Daily Herald (http://www.austindailyherald.com/20…).
“In the future, personalized prevention methods using photochemical could have a crucial role in cancer prevention, especially in high-risk populations,” Dong said. “We will continue our rigorous research in identifying molecular targets and aim for conducting human studies with phytocehemicals – this would provide the path for an enhanced approach to personalized cancer prevention.”
FDA monopoly on health
Evidence favoring the health benefits of phytonutrients is growing every day, so much so that the biotech industry is already researching transgenic and non-transgenic ways to vastly increase the phytonutrient levels in plants that already contain high levels of the chemicals, according the 2009 book Recent Advances in Biotechnology (http://books.google.com/books?id=Sl…).
Yet, even as the science bounds ahead, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration refuses to allow food producers to put the facts on their labels.
The agency has structured the rules to categorize anything that treats or prevents disease as a drug. If you eat walnuts, which are shown to lower high cholesterol — according to Natural News, the FDA declares your walnuts to be a drug. Furthermore, if anything is advertised as providing health benefits without FDA approval, it’s automatically considered to be an “unapproved drug”, even if it’s a common, everyday food like walnuts, cherries, grapes or orange (http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/Enforcemen…).
Shockingly, even references to peer-reviewed scientific studies are a no-no without FDA permission. So if you sell walnuts, and your website merely links to such studies, then you can be threatened, arrested, imprisoned and fined millions of dollars by the FDA for selling “unapproved drugs.” (http://www.naturalnews.com/027750_G…)
The Alliance for Natural Health, a non-profit organization committed to protecting integrative medicine, is fighting these FDA mandates with The Free Speech About Science Act. The congressional bill, HR 4913, is designed to stop government censorship of truthful, scientific health claims about natural foods and herbs, and restore free speech to natural health (http://www.naturalnews.com/028879_c…). If the bill passes, it will allow manufacturers and producers to reference peer-reviewed, scientific studies that highlight the health benefits of food products that they grow or sell.
Understanding Phytonutrients
Some researchers estimate up to 40,000 phytonutrients will someday be fully catalogued and understood. In just the last 30 years, many hundreds of these compounds have been identified and are currently being investigated for their health-promoting qualities, according to The George Mateljan Foundation for the World’s Healthiest Foods.
Phytonutrients are classified by their chemical structure and categorized into families based on the similarities in their structures. The phenols, or polyphenols is one family that has received attention in the scientific literature. They include the anthocyanidins, which give blueberries and grapes their dark blue and purple color, and the catechins, found in tea and wine, which provide the bitter taste as well as the tawny coloring in these foods (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?…).
Flavonoids are also commonly considered phenols, although the term “flavonoids” can refer to many phytonutrients. Isoflavones are usually categorized as members of this family. They are found in soy, kudzu, red clover, flax and rye, and have been researched extensively for their ability to protect against hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast cancer.
Other phytonutrients include the organosulfur compounds, such as the glucosinolates and indoles from brassica vegetables like broccoli, and the allylic sulfides from garlic and onions, all of which have been found to support our ability to detoxify noxious foreign compounds like pesticides and other environmental toxins.
Integrating phytonutrients into your diet
A recommended intake of phytochemicals does not exist today, according to the UC Davis report. The Standing Committee on the Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes and its Panel on Dietary Antioxidants and Related Compounds chose not to create a Dietary Reference Intake due to the lack of food composition data and a true understanding of the absorption and metabolism of phytonutrients. In the absence of such a DRI, many health authorities such as the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association recommend consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables to
ensure that people get an adequate amount of phytochemical compounds.
Available scientific evidence does not support claims that taking phytochemical supplements is as helpful as consuming the fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains from which they are taken, according to the American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/Treatment/Tre…). So, the best choice, according to O Magazine, is to head to the local farmers’ market for the season’s freshest produce packed with those precious chemicals. Typically, fruit travels more than 675 miles before hitting your table and it is leeching phytonutrients all the way.
And don’t forget to look beyond produce to the other phytonutrient-dense foods like beans and spices.
Beans are a miracle food, according to The Daily Times. They lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar and insulin production, promote digestive health, and protect against cancer. If you think of fiber, protein, and antioxidants and immediately think whole grains, meat, and fruit, think again – beans offer all three in a single package.
Turmeric, ginger, coriander, cumin and fennel are just a few of the spices containing phytonutrients, according to The Detroit News. Cinnamon has been found to help control blood sugar and improve insulin resistance in diabetics. Paprika may help raise good cholesterol, and ginger, coriander and cumin may promote healthy digestion. (http://www.detnews.com/article/2011…).

Natural Help for Cellulite – Try this Herbal Beauty Treatment

in Beauty and Skin Care, God's Green Herbs Tags: Aromatherapy, Cellulite, Cottage cheese, Essential oil, health, Natural Help for Cellulite
Do you suffer with cellulite? Maybe you just have a little patch of it under your bottom or if you’re a guy maybe you have the cottage cheese on your belly!!
Yikes, I can’t stand cottage cheese (another name for cellulite). It’s so ugly and can be hard o get rid of especially when sufferers keep drinking cellulite causing soda, refined starches and junk food. Although there are many supplements that help with cellulite I wanted to share an herbal bath that when done frequently can make a difference. But I must add that exercise is very important to eliminate and prevent cellulite in addition to a well-balanced diet.
You will need:
5 drops of essential oil of rosemary
5 drops of essential oil of lavender
3 drops of essential oil of cypress
2 drops of essential oil of juniper
2 teaspoons of almond oil
2 teaspoons of raw honey
1 teaspoon of vodka or rum
1 cup of epsom salts
Fill up your bathtub half way with warm to hot water and pour in salts, mix until dissolved. Mix all your oils, honey and alcohol together then once mixed pour into the bathtub. Now get in, relax and massage the areas with cellulite which will help break down the fatty deposits. Do this for about 20 minutes. Once your done soaking and massaging come out and dry lightly. Moisturize with a natural non toxic lotion or with organic Shea butter. You can add in 2 drops of each of the oils used above before applying moisturizer for better results.
Rosemary and Lavender have been used by many to pamper and condition the skin while cypress and juniper exert a diuretic action which results in reduced water retention. The salts help aid the body in toxin elimination and work well to relax muscles.
Enjoy this bath 2 to 3 times a week.

Cancer in a Bottle – Learn to Read Labels and Avoid these Toxic Chemicals
29 Mar 2011 Leave a Comment
in Baby & Child Health, Beauty and Skin Care, cancer, Green Living Tags: DMDM hydantoin, Environmental Working Group, health, Personal care, Sodium laureth sulfate
Know the ingredients in your personal care products. A fantastic Guide by EWG (Environmental Working Group)
Better products are truthful in their marketing claims and free of potentially worrisome ingredients. Some products might make claims like “gentle” or “natural,” but since the government does not require safety testing, personal care product manufacturers can use almost any chemical they want, regardless of risks.
How to read a label
Every personal care product must list its ingredients. Here’s how to navigate the label:
- Start at the end, with preservatives. Avoid:
- Words ending in “paraben”
- DMDM hydantoin
- Imidazolidinyl urea
- Methylchloroisothiazolinone
- Methylisothiazolinone
- Triclosan
- Triclocarban
- Triethanolamine (or “TEA”)
- Check the beginning of the ingredients lists, where soaps, surfactants, and lubricants show up. Try to avoid ingredients that start with “PEG” or have an “-eth” in the middle (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate).
- Read the ingredients in the middle. Look for these words: “FRAGRANCE,” “FD&C,” or “D&C.”
For grown-ups
Many parents pay more attention to their kids’ environmental health than their own, but adult bodies can be affected by toxic chemicals, too. EWG’s Safer Shopping List has nine common-sense tips to reduce everyone’s exposures. For instance, buy fragrance-free, skip the nail polish and use fewer products.
Just for kids
Extra caution is in order for kids because, pound for pound, they are exposed to more contaminants in everyday products than adults. Their immature metabolism and organ systems are typically less capable of fending off chemical assaults. Even subtle damage to young bodies can lead to disease later in life.
Follow EWG’s top five tips for kids:
- Use fewer products and use them less often.
- Don’t trust ad hype. Check ingredients.
- Buy fragrance-free products.
- Avoid the use of baby powder.
- Always avoid EWG’s top six chemicals of concern for kids:
- 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3 Diol
- BHA
- Boric acid and sodium borate
- DMDM Hydantoin
- Oxybenzone
- Triclosan
