How to bring down a Fever Naturally

Did you know you can use herbal baths to help assist fever in adults, young children and babies?  There are several herbs like chamomile that contain properties that promote perspiration which in turn cools the body down resulting in a lowering of the fever.

You can prepare 1 or 2 quarts of chamomile infusion by using one well-rounded teaspoon of dried chamomile for each cup (8oz) of water.  Pour the boiling water over the herbs, cover and let steep for 30 minutes.  Strain off the herbs and pour into warm bath water.

You can also sponge bathe a young child with the warm infusion if you don’t want to put them in the bathtub.  However never keep sponging your baby with fever once shivering begins. You should stop immediately as shivering increases body heat and can lead to a seizure.

This infusion of Chamomile can also be given orally to children at a rate of 1/4 a cup every 2 hours until fever comes down and then continue to give 3 times a day for 2 to 3 days after fever is gone to aid the body in its recuperation.   I use a dropper for babies since they are not likely to drink from a cup when sick.  Adults can enjoy a cup of chamomile tea every 3 to 4 hours during fever until it comes down.

La Chica Organica sells a fantastic mix of organic herbs called Herbal Fever Assist Bath & Tea™ that can be made into a bath and a tea to assist the body during a fever.

Health News: Another Tylenol Recall, your Children are at Risk

If you have been following the news I am sure you have heard all he recent issues with Tylenol and the recalls associated with their products.  And today yet another recall.

That’s why we don’t use Tylenol in our home.  We use garlic instead.  See my post on Garlic, natures fever reducer here: http://lachicaorganica.wordpress.com/2010/04/22/garlic-%e2%80%93-natures-fever-reducer/

Below is a fantastic article by Mike Adams on the latest recall.

Children’s Tylenol recalled over tiny particles and out-of-control manufacturing processes

by Mike Adams

Johnson & Johnson has issued a recall of over 40 Tylenol brand children’s products, including Concentrated Tylenol Infant Drops, Children’s Motrin, Children’s Zyrtec, Benadryl and other over-the-counter products. The recall was triggered by what the FDA calls “manufacturing deficiencies.” Douglas Stearn, a senior FDA official, said the manufacturing process was “not in control”, which is the FDA’s polite way of saying it was “out of control.”

A press release on the McNeil Consumer Healthcare web page explains the reason for recall:

“Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles.” (http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/…)

Tiny particles of what? That’s left unsaid, but it is likely to be tiny particles of paint or metal from the machinery used to manufacture the products.

These quality control problems have apparently existed for quite some time. “This does go back in time” said Stearn from the FDA. “We have to try to figure that out.”

In other words, the manufacturing plant is out of control, and it has been for a long time, and there are pieces of something (perhaps paint or machinery) found in the medicines. They don’t say it that way, of course, but that’s a reasonable conclusion from the evidence made public so far.

And to think… this is medicine for children!

A history of quality control with Tylenol products

The Washington Post is now reporting that in January, “…McNeil recalled 49 types of Tylenol products made for adults and two Tylenol products made for children after consumers complained of a mold-like odor and of temporary and minor nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The company determined that some of the medicines had been contaminated by trace amounts of a chemical that is sometimes present on shipping and storage material.” (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy…)

Shipping material chemicals in the medicine? That sounds bizarre, but the really bizarre part about this story is that even when Tylenol products aren’t chemically contaminated, they still contain questionable chemicals by design, such as aspartame.

The following Children’s Tylenol products are all made with aspartame:

• Childrens TYLENOL acetaminophen Fruit Flavored Chewable Tablets
• Childrens TYLENOL acetaminophen Grape Flavored Chewable Tablets
• Childrens TYLENOL acetaminophen Cold Multi-Symptom Chewable Tablets
• Junior Strength TYLENOL acetaminophen Fruit Flavored Chewable Tablets
• Junior Strength TYLENOL acetaminophen Grape Flavored Chewable Tablets
• PEDIACARE Cold-Allergy Tablets for Ages 6 to 12
• PEDIACARE Cough-Cold Tablets for Ages 6 to 12
• PEDICARE Childrens Cold Relief Tablets
• TYLENOL Cold and Flu Hot Medication
• TYLENOL Cold and Flu No Drowsiness Formula Hot Medication
• Childrens Chewable CO-TYLENOL
(http://www.wnho.net/use_of_aspartam…)

So even with Tylenol products meet the FDA’s requirements for manufacturing, they still contain chemicals that no informed parent would ever want to feed their child. And Tylenol products will never be recalled just because they contain aspartame, since the FDA ridiculously insists that aspartame is safe.

Safer than tiny particles from machine parts, perhaps, but in no way is aspartame safe to feed to children. In an honest world, the entire Tylenol product line would be recalled due to contamination with aspartame and the fact that many of its products can cause liver toxicity in both children and adults. Garlic – Nature’s Fever Reducer

I have been using garlic for years to lower fever in our family.  But I had never used it on my children before one year of age until recently.  Our little baby a few weeks back had a very high persistent fever that seemed to come and go after being treated for an ear infection. He was also teething and although not common some children get very high fevers during the season of teething.

This time the fever was a little over 103 and it wasn’t budging.  So I whipped out the garlic and dropped a few cloves in the blender with very little water.  Once a paste was made I grabbed the olive oil and set out for what was one of the Stinkiest nights of our life.  Because baby was rooming with us, our room smelt like a scene from little Italy just after a few hours.  I was waiting for my cumpas to come walking in asking for meatballs and Chianti. LOLOL

So what is the remedy?  OK it’s simple.  You overly coat the feet with Olive Oil and place a gauze over both soles of each foot then apply sparingly the paste of Garlic on both feet then cover with another piece of gauze.  Then you wrap each foot in gauze and cover with saran wrap and put on some socks.  This treatment is best when done overnight but should not be left on for more than 6 to 8 hours as garlic is very strong when applied topically and can burn the skin.   In most people after just a few minutes their breath will smell like garlic, it’s amazing.

In our case with baby the fever was down to 99.1 in no time and by the next morning baby was alert and happy again and the fever disappeared along with some congestion in the nasal passages.

So in our house when a fever has run its course for a few days and is still high and uncomfortable we run for the garlic not the Tylenol.  But be warned your room will stink of garlic, so it’s best to isolate your garlic roll child and place a waterproof liner under the fitted sheet so that the smell does not get into the mattress.  Also make sure the fever is not a sign of a more serious illness.  In our case we knew what was going on and our holistic pediatrician did as well.

Do you have Thyme?

Yes I said thyme as in the green herb that we often cook with.

Thyme unlike what many people are aware of makes a great tea to boost immunity rid the body of infectious bacteria, viruses and has great astringent properties.

Thyme is an aromatic herb. It’s antiseptic and used as a circulatory stimulant when taken hot. Its also a bronchial antispasmodic and expectorant.

Thyme is taken for fevers, colds and flu, coughs, bronchitis, asthma, bronchial spasms, and expectoration of upper respiratory catarrh.  Its also used as As a gargle for sore throat, tonsillitis and laryngitis and to relieve colic, flatulence and diarrhea.

Its best to use Organic Thyme, you can purchase store bought fresh Thyme or the dried leaves.  If you use the dried leaves make sure to store in a cool dry and dark place.  To make the tea just boil some distilled water and pour it over about a teaspoon of dried Thyme.  Let it steep for about 15 minutes strain off the herbs then add the juice of one lemon and sweeten with honey.  If you want you can also add some dried ginger root or the juice of fresh ginger root.

La Chica Organica can get you Organic Dried Thyme and many other Organic Herbs at a great price- just send me your request to LaChicaOrganica@gmail.com if your interested.
