Organic Baby Stealing Green Smoothie Very Cute

This morning I was feeling a little bit under the weather so my hubby made an organic green smoothie for us and handed me mine in a large 20 ounce glass.  Our little one was bouncing on my lap and lunged for my smoothie almost toppling it over.

People think I lie when I tell them that the kids drink anywhere from 1 to 3 green smoothies a day.  Especially when baby sports green colored juice in his sippy cup.  The first thing I hear is “yuck, what is that.”

But green smoothies are very important for everyone especially children.  Greens help build the immune system, improve digestion, beautify the skin, gently cleanse, provide essential nutrients, minerals, living enzymes and vitamins that your body needs to function properly.  These past few years (during the week) we have opted for nutritious herbal, green and fruit smoothies instead of breakfast.  This is the very opposite of what most people do today.  It’s unfortunate that for decades people have thought that eating a large breakfast full of refined carbs and sugars was a good thing.  But it’s not correct for a few reasons.  The most important reason is that when you get up in the morning your body should begin the purging process to get rid of all the food you ate the day before.  Your digestive system wants to evacuate but you just shove more processed food into it which is like putting your finger over the end of a hose that is turned on.  The only thing you’re accomplishing is a lethal buildup of toxins that will be reabsorbed internally and begin to make you sick over time.

So be sure to “raise your glass” and let it be green!  Your body will thank you.

Here is my simple recipe for making a 100% organic green smoothie that is baby and kid approved, although some adults may make a face or two!

2 cups Organic Coconut Milk or Almond Milk cold

¾ cup organic frozen mangoes

1 organic banana

½ teaspoon of organic coconut oil

1 teaspoon of organic wheatgrass powder by Amazing Grass

½ cup of organic romaine lettuce mix (washed)

1 teaspoon of organic chlorophyll

2 or 3 organic raw dates for added sweetness

Place all the ingredients in your blender in the same order mentioned above.  Blend until smooth and enjoy.

Be sure to sport your green mustache with your kids, they’ll think its cool!

May the green be with you ™

Another Great Green Smoothie Recipe that Supports the Immune System & Digestion

Smoothies and me go together like hot chocolate and whipped cream.  I can’t live without them, especially since I am always on the run.

So make a choice to drink at least 3 smoothies a week and work your way to one a day and then 2 a day if possible.  My family and I enjoy smoothies 1 to 3 times a day and here is one of my favorite recipes I hope you will enjoy.

Ingredients

2 cups of organic coconut milk or organic almond, rice, raw milk
4 organic pitted dates
1 banana
1 cup chopped dandelion or kale leaves
1 cup organic spinach leaves
2/3 cup fresh or frozen organic strawberries or berry blend

Optional – 1 Teaspoon of organic raw honey if you like it really sweet (But don’t make this a habit)

Blend it all together and enjoy with a straw.

If you want to add in protein and fiber then you can use 2 teaspoons of organic chia seeds but you will have to add in one more cup of liquid which will turn this into a large smoothie for 2.  Drink immediately and freeze any portion you did not drink to use as smoothie ice cubes the next time your up for a blended breakfast!

Blessings!

May The Green be with You™

Got Cayenne? Find Out why You Should Always Have it on Hand

A rare long form of Capsicum chinense-pepper

Image via Wikipedia

Cayenne is one of those herbs that I try to never leave home without.  I carry a very potent extract in my purse that packs a mild 30,000 scoville heat units.   This miracle herb is useful to promote circulation, stop an asthma attack, alleviate a sore throat, aid digestion, regulate blood pressure and stop internal and external bleeding. But the most amazing thing about cayenne is that just a small amount has been known to stop a heart attack in under a minute.  For a recent article I wrote on this click here.

For more details on the great uses and properties of cayenne pepper continue reading below.  You can pick up organic cayenne powder or cayenne extract at your local health-food store.  We take the organic cayenne extract I make  in 1 ounce of juice or water and then we jump up and down, cry and its all over.  All of our kids enjoy cayenne shots several times a week and they compete to see who drinks it down without cringing.  So I dare you to dive into the cayenne if you can handle the heat.

Key Health Benefits of Cayenne Peppers

• This herb is a great food for the circulatory system in that it feeds the necessary elements into the cell structure of the arteries, veins and capillaries so that these regain the elasticity of youth again, and the blood pressure adjusts itself to normal. It rebuilds the tissue in the stomach and heals the stomach and intestinal ulcers; in equalizing the blood circulation, Cayenne produces natural warmth in your body; and in stimulating the peristaltic motion of the intestines, it aids in assimilation and elimination.

• Cayenne regulates the flow of blood from the head to the feet so that the pressure is equalized; it influences the heart immediately, then gradually extends its effects to the arteries, capillaries, and nerves (the frequency of the pulse is not increased, but is given more vigor).

• Human circulation; it is warming; dilating; specific for varicose veins; equalizes the blood pressure in the arterial and venous system; equalizes blood pressure instantly actually.

• Cayenne is useful in alleviating allergies, muscle cramp, improving digestion, gives more pep and energy, and helps wound healing with minimal scar tissue.

• Cayenne is a counter-irritant; it brings blood to the surface and allows the toxins to be taken away.

In an article reported on March 16, 2006 by Reuters, the main ingredient in Cayenne, capsaicin, was found to destroy prostate cancer cells. Here is what the article said,

Capsaicin led 80 percent of human prostate cancer cells growing in mice to commit suicide in a process known as apoptosis, the researchers said. Prostate cancer tumors in mice fed capsaicin were about one-fifth the size of tumors in untreated mice, they reported in the journal Cancer Research. ‘Capsaicin had a profound anti-proliferative effect on human prostate cancer cells in culture,’ said Dr. Soren Lehmann of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine.”

• Capsicum supports the natural beat (rhythm) of the viscera and interior actions of the glandular, circulatory, lymphatic, and digestive systems. It has been used with great success as a cure for spotted fever (?); the most active stimulant to support and re-animate feeble or exhausted powers.cayenne pepper

• This is a medicine of great value in the practice, and may be safely used in all cases of disease, to raise and retain the internal vital heat of the system, cause a free perspiration, and keep the determining powers to the surface. The only preparation is to have it reduced to a fine powder. For a dose, take from half to a teaspoonful in hot water or tea sweetened with honey.

• Dr. Coffin includes cayenne pepper in his composition powder to restore the normal function of the body in the various stages of pregnancy and childbirth. For morning sickness he recommends a combination of ‘White poplar bark, agrimony, centaury, raspberry leaves, yarrow and rhubarb, each a quarter of an ounce, steep in two quarts of water, strain, and add while hot two teaspoons of powdered cinnamon, half a teaspoonful of Cayenne pepper, and let the patient take one tablespoonful every three hours until the symptoms are removed if this should not relieve, give an emetic and repeat if necessary.

• Great for heartburn.

• Capsicum is a powerful rubefacient.

• Capsicum is a general nervous stimulant; a specific for delirium tremens.

• For atonic gout, in paralysis, in dropsy, in tympanitis, and in the debilitated stages of fever.

• For scrofulous; dyspepsia; flatulence; it’s an excellent carminative.

• For sore throats—gargle (prepare the gargle with honey); for spasmodic and irritating coughs; heartburn and diarrhea;

• Enables feeble stomachs to digest food; for atonic dyspepsia; specific for hemorrhoids; cures intermittent fever; Capsicum has the power to control menorrhagia; relieves sea-sickness;

• In delirium tremens it is beneficial by enabling the patient to retain and digest food.

• Capsicum is particularly efficient in tonsillitis, and the sore throat of scarlet fever and in diphtheria no application is so efficient as a strong gargle or wash make with Capsicum.

• Promote digestion; relieves pains of the womb; removes obstructed menstruation; for quinsy; for all diseases of the throat; use as a plaster with honey for rheumatic pains, pains of the joints, gout, swellings, etc.; Use outwardly as a liniment, apply it warm or hot for arthritis and rheumatism; gargle for scarlet fever; use an infusion for ulcers in the mouth, strep throat or tonsillitis.

• Cayenne is an excellent remedy for a cold; mix infusion with slippery elm and molasses or honey, and take in doses throughout the day; also excellent for sore throat and coughs.

• Cayenne mixed with pennyroyal (an herb) taken for three days will expel the dead birth material from a miscarriage.

• Eases toothache; preserves the teeth from rotting, and when rubbed on the gums, stimulates them enough to prevent pyorrhea.

• Excellent for any type of internal hemorrhage, (create an infusion with bethroot or star root);

• Capsicum is an important remedy in cholera; Capsicum stops vomiting; combine with equal parts of Capsicum and common table salt, one half ounce of each, one pint of good vinegar, give in tablespoon doses for cholera, vomiting “cholera morbus” — the gross material associated with cholera from the system

• In chronic lumbago a plaster of Capsicum with garlic, pepper and liquid amber (silarasa) or storax is an efficient stimulant and rubefacient application.

• When made into a lozenge with sugar and tragacanth it is a remedy for hoarseness.

• For a carminative make pills of equal parts of Capsicum, rhubarb and ginger or aloes.

• Combine Capsicum with cinchona for intermittent and lethargic affections and for atonic gout and in advanced stages of rheumatism.

• Combine with asafoetida and sweet flag root or camphor in the form of pills in cases of cholera.

• Capsicum has a powerful action on the mucous membrane, and in hoarseness and sore throat, and in putrid throat a gargle made of Capsicum is particularly beneficial.

• By pouring hot vinegar upon the fruits of Capsicum all the essential qualities are preserved. This vinegar is an excellent stomachic.

• The whole plant steeped in milk is successfully applied to reduce swellings and hardened tumors.

• An infusion with cinnamon and sugar is a valuable drink for patients suffering from delirium tremens as it satisfies the craving in dipsomaniacs. A dose of ten grains of finely powdered capsicum seed, given with an ounce of hot water, two or three times a day, sometimes shows wonderful effects in cases of delirium tremens.

• Capsicum can be used in the treatment of a snake bite.

• As well as the fruit being used as a spice, the leaves were applied to ulcers and headaches.

• Capsicum is given internally in atonic dyspepsia and flatulence. It is used externally as a counter-irritant in the form of ointment, plaster, medicated wool, etc. for the relief of rheumatism and lumbago.

• Oral administration of Capsicum may stimulate the gall bladder reflex.

• Capsicum either contains a cholagogue, or acts as a powerful stimulus upon the mucous membrane of the duodenum.

• Cayenne pepper is forgotten therapeutic agent against anorexia, liver congestion, and vascular troubles. Capsicum is highly effective in causing hemorrhoids to regress; and these fruits have the same action on varicose veins. The results are attributed to alkaloids or glucosides in the peppers.

• Excessive amounts of Capsicum (above 20 grams, thus, nearly an ounce) may induce frequent bowel movements.

• Cayenne stimulates the appetite, more especially as a hot climate tends to produce anorexia. We have always held the saliva is the key that unlocks the door to digestion. Capsicum, a sialogogue, will stimulate the flow of saliva and will be very helpful to people who have become accustomed to ‘inhaling’ their food and thus robbing themselves of the benefits of saliva in the digestive process. Capsicum would stimulate their flow of saliva as they return to a healthier attitude toward eating.

• Capsicum may be valuable in the prevention and treatment of blood clots.

• Cayenne pepper is very soothing; it is effective as a poultice for rheumatism, inflammation, pleurisy, and helpful also if taken internally for these. For sores and wounds it makes a good poultice. It is a stimulant when taken internally as well as being antispasmodic. Good for kidneys, spleen and pancreas; wonderful for lockjaw; will heal a sore ulcerated stomach; Capsicum is a specific and very effective remedy for yellow fever, as well as other fevers and may be taken in capsules followed by a glass of water.

Help your Digestion with this Delicious Cost Effective Remedy

Hawaiian papaya (with lilies and ginger)

Image via Wikipedia

I used to do a lot of juicing in the past but it is very time-consuming and messy. We still juice at home but these past 2 years I find myself making more super nutritious smoothies than juices.  Making smoothies is a great alternative to juicing. It is much faster, less messy, and you also get all the fiber in addition to juice.

I must note that if a person has a critical health situation then juicing is the way to go.

OK so the smoothie I am bringing to you today is a tasty papaya, frozen mango and sprouts smoothie.

Now wait just a second I saw that look on your face (those of you that just raised your eyebrows).  It does not taste bad and its very healthy for you, trust me on this.

Papaya as you may already know comes alongside to aid digestion.  This occurs because of its high content of Papain, an enzyme similar to Pepsin (which is produced by the gastric juices of the stomach).  This enzyme plays a very important role in protein digestion and aids the digestive system with other difficulties that may be present.  Enzymes are needed for the digestive system to work properly. They are necessary to break down food particles so they can be utilized for energy.

Its important to note that improper protein breakdown in the digestive system often leads to allergies as I found out these last 9 years of health research.  So if you suffer from allergies, you just might be lacking digestive enzymes like those found in papaya.  Other symptoms you can experience if you’re lacking enzymes are bloating, belching, gas, bowel disorders, abdominal cramping and heartburn.

Sprouted grains, seeds and legumes are another fantastic way to add living enzymes to your diet.  You may not know this, but sprouts are among the most powerful enzyme-rich foods on the planet.  For this recipe you can use alfalfa or sunflower sprouts.

The frozen mango gives it a nice flavor and removes the need to add ice which waters down the nutritional content.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of sprouts

1 cup of frozen mango

1 cup of sliced papaya without seeds (I leave the skin on when using organic papaya to increase the nutritional value of the smoothie)

1 cup of organic sweetened Kefir or organic coconut milk or gluten free organic vanilla rice milk

Optional

3 tablespoons of organic coconut sugar

1 teaspoon of organic unprocessed virgin coconut oil

½ teaspoon of organic chia seeds

Once you have all your ingredients ready place them with the softest item first to enable good and even blending. So your order should look like this: liquid, optional items, sprouts, papaya, and frozen mango.  Blend until nice and smooth and share with a friends or a loved one.  They will thank you for it.

May the Green be with you™.

What Food can be used as a Sugar, Soy Sauce, Flour, Vinegar and Nectar with Exceptional Health benefits?

Have a guess?  Lets see if you can get this one.  This tree is tall and usually found in tropical climates.  Its used along beaches and roads for decoration.  Any ideas yet??

OK I will spill the beans.  It’s the coconut tree.

You see coconut trees are not just the perfect tree for water, oil, and palm sugar but the coconut tree has many other fantastic health benefits that you might not have known.  Be sure to check out my recent article on why you should consume coconut oil by clicking here.

Here are some startling Coconut facts courtesy of Coconut Secret:

If you’re anything like me, you prefer the basic facts highlighted for you in bullet point fashion ~ everything important you need to know about the naturally occurring health benefits of coconut tree products. So, I’ll get right to it!

  • Helps Prevent Obesity by speeding up metabolism, providing an immediate source of energy with fewer calories than other fats.  People who consistently use coconut products, report a stronger ability to go without eating for several hours with no affects of hypoglycemia.
  • Improves Heart Health by providing healthy short chain and medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) that are essential to good hcoconut budealth.  Close to 98% of all fatty acids consumed are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA), which are very different from MCFA that have no negative effect on cholesterol ratios and help to lower the risk of atherosclerosis and protect against heart disease.  Studies have shown that populations in Polynesia and Sri Lanka, where coconuts are a dietary staple, do not suffer from high serum cholesterol or heart disease.  Unlike other fats, the unique properties of coconut also contain a large amount of lauric acid, which is the predominant fatty acid found in mother’s milk.
  • High in Dietary Fiber rivaling other fiber sources such as psyllium, wheat bran, oat bran, and rice bran.  Coconut supplies an impressive 61% dietary fiber!   Foods contain two types of carbohydrates – digestible and non-digestible.  Digestible carbohydrates (soluble fiber) consists of starch and sugar and promote calories. Non-digestible carbohydrates (insoluble fiber) contains NO calories.  Since the body cannot digest the dietary fiber in coconut, no calories are derived from it and it has no effect on blood sugar.
  • Low Glycemic Index (GI) measures how fast available carbohydrates in food raise blood sugar levels.  Coconut fiber slows down the release of glucose, therefore requiring less insulin to utilize the glucose and transport it into the cell where it is converted into energy.  Coconut also assists in relieving stress on the pancreas and enzyme systems of the body, in turn, reducing the risks associated with Diabetes.  Coconut Nectar and Crystals have a very low GI of only 35 (compared to honey with a GI of 55-83, and sugar with a GI of 65-100.)
  • Reduces Sweet Cravings and improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose.  The healthy fat in coconut slowsdown any rise in blood sugar and helps to reduce hypoglycemic cravings.
  • Improves Digestion and many of the symptoms and inflammatory conditions associatedwith digestive and bowel disorders, by supporting absorption of other nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids while also providing beneficial dietary fiber.
  • Quick Energy Boost that provides a super nutritious source of extra energy.  Coconut is utilized by the body to actually produce energy, rather than to store it as body fat.  It supports improved endurance during physical and athletic performance. As well, it promotes healthy thyroid function and helps to relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue.
  • In addition, coconut contains No Trans-Fats, is Gluten-Free, Non-Toxic, Hypoallergenic, and also contains Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antifungal, and Anti-parasitic healing properties.  Coconut helps to aid and support overall Immune System functions.

Below are some fantastic products you can purchase at your local health-food store made from the coconut tree.  If you live internationally and can’t access these products please shoot me an email and I would be happy to purchase them for you and ship them to you.  Of course you will have to cover all product costs, handling fee and shipping.  You can contact me by emailing LaChicaOrganica@gmail.com.

Raw Coconut Aminos Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce by Coconut Secret

Coconut Secret Raw Coconut Aminos Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce contains 65% Less Sodium than Soy Sauce! Coconut Secret Raw Coconut Aminos Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce has many nutritional benefits, most notably is its impressive amino acid content compared to soy-based sauces. Commonly described as the “building blocks of protein,” amino acids are vitally important to human health. They contribute to the repair and rebuilding of muscle tissue, help to enhance overall brain and nervous system function, and assist in boosting the immune system and physical energy levels. Second only to water, protein is one of the most important substances in our bodies, which is why it is nutritionally beneficial to consume a diet that is rich in amino acids.

Coconut Aminos vs. Soy-Based sauces
A comparison between coconut tree sap and soy, shows that coconut sap contains up to 14 times the amino acid content of soy. Many soy sauces on the market are fermented by first soaking the soybeans in water and salt, and then adding specific cultures of molds, yeasts, and bacteria to help catalyze the fermentation process. Coconut Aminos is made from coconut tree sap, which comes out of the tree so vital, active and alive with nutrients, that it is only blended with Coconut Secrets’ own sun dried mineral-rich sea salt and aged, without the need for a fermentation booster or added water. As well, the majority of conventional soy sauces on the market are made with non-organic, genetically modified (GMO) soybeans. Long term use of unfermented soy-related products has led to an increase in soy allergies, a disruption in proper thyroid function, and an overload of estrogens in the body. Infants fed exclusively soy-based formula have 13,000 – 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula, the equivalent of five birth control pills per day.

Health Secrets of Coconut Aminos
When the coconut tree is tapped, it produces a naturally sweet, nutrient-rich “sap” that exudes from the coconut blossoms. This sap is very low glycemic and contains 17 amino acids, minerals, Vitamin C, broad-spectrum B vitamins, and has nearly neutral pH. Small batches ensure that organic Coconut Aminos, made from natural sap, is a raw, enzymatically alive product that never exceeds the temperatures of an average summer day in the tropics. The “Gran Molucas Sea Salt” used in Coconut Aminos, garners its name from the exotic, tropical island of Mindanao, the 2nd largest island in the Philippines. It is surrounded on all sides by converging Pacific ocean waters ~ the Sulu Sea to the West, the Celebes Sea to the South, and the Philippine Sea to the East. A local culinary heritage in Mindanao, this unbleached, unrefined, naturally white sea salt, is fed only by the sun and the sea. It is hand-harvested by local salt producers working as their forefathers did, in the ancestral salt fields. After many days of labor, the salt is then sun-dried (to evaporate excess moisture) in open-air cages lined with clay bricks. The result, is a distinctly flavorful and nutritious, mineral-rich, unrefined sea salt.

Raw Coconut Vinegar

Coconut Secret Raw Coconut Vinegar is more nutritious than Apple Cider Vinegar! Coconut Secret Raw Coconut Vinegar has an alkalizing effect in the body, much the same as apple cider vinegar. Although vinegar is an acid food, when it is metabolized by the body, it becomes alkaline producing. The naturally occurring organic acids found in coconut sap vinegar, provide the body with important minerals such as potassium, calcium, sodium and magnesium. These and other minerals form compounds in the body that convert acid body fluids into alkaline. These are known as alkalizing minerals.

Coconut trees are grown in rich volcanic soil, contributing to the sap’s high mineral content (especially abundant in Potassium – 192 mg per tablespoon of fresh sap). Coconut Secrets’ vinegar contains 17 health-promoting amino acids, broad spectrum B vitamins, vitamin C, and naturally occurring FOS (a prebiotic that promotes digestive health). Apple cider vinegar enthusiasts say it can heal a vast array of ailments and prevent chronic diseases of aging, largely because it is chock full of nutrients. However, in truth, according to the USNDA Nutrient Database, a nutritional analysis reveals that apple cider vinegar has no measurable vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, or vitamin E, ~ and the fiber (pectin) and amino acid content is zero.
