Natural Approach to Allergies for You & Your Family – Plus Info on What Testing to Ask For

Are you suffering from allergies right now.  Then this article is for you.  So many of us have allergies yet we go undiagnosed and suffer from all kinds of ailments and have no idea that they are being caused by allergies.

For instance, did you know that allergies can trigger, mimic and contribute to the following problems?

Chronic ear infections

Diabetes

Eczema and psoriasis

Fibromyalgia

Sinusitis

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Headaches

Pain on the body

Heartburn

Allergies can make many existing problems worse, start or trigger several disorders and create symptoms that mimic many common symptoms present in a long list of disorders.

If you suspect you may have allergies because you suffer from any of the above issues you may want to consider specific testing that can be done in a private lab.

There are simple tests you can request to determine if you have food sensitivities, allergies and or intolerances.

IgE allergy testing looks at foods that cause an immediate allergy, these are usually the reactions that most doctors recognize.  They are reactions to foods or inhalants that involve the immune systems IgE antibodies.

IgG sensitivities test looks at many foods to determine delayed sensitivities.  Symptoms usually don’t appear for several hours.  These symptoms can be present for months or years until the reactive food has been removed from the diet for several months or longer.

Testing for Gluten intolerance and Celiac disease is also VERY important because a lot of issues like IBS, crohns, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and many other ailments can be caused because of a gluten allergy.  Learning to check for food allergies and in tolerances has been very important for us, since my firsborn had many allergies as a young child that went undiagnosed.  After careful observation I started to see that certain foods would trigger his asthma.  So for the past 11 years we have been on a journey with him to get him healthier.  I did case studies on my  son and wrote down everything for weeks and weeks at a time.  I would compare his symptoms and research ways to help him.  He was on over 6 meds a day before his 2 birthday and the pediatrician we had, believed in prescribing an antibiotic for every little thing, completely destroying his immune system and digestive function.  I am so thankful that I know what I know now, even though we had very rough months in and out of ER’s and many sleepless nights.  But you would never get this info from me had I not been allowed to live through those perils, so for that I am blessed.

You can also test for intolerances which are generally chemical reactions to foods that do not involve the immune system.  Most allergists completely overlook intolerances because they are not considered to be classic allergies.  However food intolerances can wreak havoc by causing migraines, headaches, diarrhea and many other things.

Whether you suffer from allergies or food sensitivities I have found that taking herbs that have high anti fungal properties can help along with a good probiotic like the one from Garden of Life.

Once you know what allergies and or food sensitivities you have it’s easier to devise a plan to first detox and then remove foods that may trigger an allergic reaction.  After diagnosing, cleansing and removing triggers, you can focus on supplementation and herbal remedies to aid the body’s immune response.

For natural approaches to allergies, consider the following:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: According to Mother Earth News, a German study published in the journal Allergy found people who have diets rich in of omega-3 fatty acids suffer from fewer allergy symptoms. A second study in Sweden found that children who regularly ate fish prior to age one had much lower allergies by age four. My favorite sources of omega-3 fatty acids are grass fed meat and eggs, and krill oil. (Fish has become too contaminated to rely on as a staple.)
  • Probiotics: In a 2008 study, researchers discovered that people who took probiotics throughout allergy season had lower levels of an antibody that triggered allergy symptoms. They also had higher levels of a different antibody (IgG), thought to play a protective role against allergic reactions. Other researchers found evidence that giving probiotics to newborns and mothers-to-be may help prevent childhood allergies.
  • Vitamin D: Insufficient vitamin D levels have been linked to more severe asthma and allergies in children. Vitamin D has also been found to reduce allergic responses to mold.
  • Hot peppers: Hot chili peppers, horseradish, and hot mustards work as natural decongestants. In fact, a nasal spray containing capsaicin (derived from hot peppers) significantly reduced nasal allergy symptoms in a 2009 study.
  • Locally produced honey: Many believe that consuming locally produced honey, which contains pollen spores picked up by the bees from your local plants, can act as a natural “allergy vaccine.” By introducing a small amount of allergen into your system (from eating the honey), your immune system is activated and over time can build up your natural immunity against it. Just be careful to consume honey moderately as it’s high in fructose.

Below are several other foods and herbs you might want to try:

  • Quercetin: Quercetin is an antioxidant that belongs to a class of water-soluble plant substances called flavonoids. Although research is sketchy, many believe quercetin-rich foods (such as apples, berries, red grapes, red onions, capers and black tea) prevent histamine release—so they are “natural antihistamines.” Quercetin is also available in supplement form—a typical dose for hay fever is between 200 and 400 mg per day.
  • Butterbur (Petasites hybridus): Another natural antihistamine, this herb has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of conditions, including migraines. In a German study, 40 percent of patients taking butterbur root extract were able to reduce their intake of traditional asthma medications. A British study found butterbur as effective as the drug Zyrtec.A word of caution is needed, however. Butterbur is a member of the ragweed family, so if you are allergic to ragweed, marigold, daisy, or chrysanthemum, you should not use butterbur. Also, the RAW herb should not be used because it contains substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can be toxic to the liver and kidneys and may cause cancer. Commercial butterbur products have had a lot of these alkaloids removed.
  • Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica):  Another natural antihistamine, stinging nettle has a long history of use for seasonal allergies, without the drowsiness and dry mouth associated with many pharmacological antihistamines. Nettle inhibits your body’s ability to produce histamines. The recommended dose is about 300 mg freeze-dried nettle extract daily.
  • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis): Goldenseal may be helpful for seasonal allergies. Laboratory studies suggest that berberine, the active ingredient in goldenseal, has antibacterial and immune-enhancing properties.
  • Eucalyptus oil: This pure essential oil can be healing to mucus membranes. You can apply a drop on a cotton ball and sniff it several times a day, add a few drops to water (or to a nebulizer, if you own one) for a steam treatment, or use a few drops in your bathwater.

Health News: Soy is NOT a Health Food – Buyers Beware

We have all heard these past 10 years that soy is a wonder food.  People have been consuming everything from Edamame to Tofu to Soy Infant Formula. But soy is really not the better choice unless you are consuming fermented soy products like: Natto, Miso and Tempeh.

These products are consumable because after proper fermentation the phytate and “anti-nutrient” levels of soybeans are reduced, and their beneficial properties become available to your digestive system.

But whats the deal with non fermented Soy.

Look at these problems highlighted by Dr. Mercola?

Here is a summary of soy’s most glaring problems.

  1. 91 percentof soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GM). The genetic modification is done to impart resistance to the toxic herbicide Roundup. While this is meant to increase farming efficiency and provide you with less expensive soy, the downside is that your soy is loaded with this toxic pesticide. The plants also contain genes from bacteria that produce a protein that has never been part of the human food supply.GM soy has been linked to an increase in allergies. Disturbingly, the only published human feeding study on GM foods ever conducted verified that the gene inserted into GM soy transfers into the DNA of our gut bacteria and continues to function. This means that years after you stop eating GM soy, you may still have a potentially allergenic protein continuously being produced in your intestines.Even more frightening is the potential for GM soy to cause infertility in future generations, which has been evidenced by recent Russian research.
  2. Soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients.” Soy foods contain anti-nutritional factors such as saponins, soyatoxin, phytates, protease inhibitors, oxalates, goitrogens and estrogens. Some of these factors interfere with the enzymes you need to digest protein. While a small amount of anti-nutrients would not likely cause a problem, the amount of soy that many Americans are now eating is extremely high.
  3. Soy contains hemagglutinin. Hemagglutinin is a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together. These clumped cells are unable to properly absorb and distribute oxygen to your tissues.
  4. Soy contains goitrogensGoitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
  5. Soy contains phytates.Phytates (phytic acid) bind to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc — all of which are co-factors for optimal biochemistry in your body. This is particularly problematic for vegetarians, because eating meat reduces the mineral-blocking effects of these phytates (so it is helpful—if you do eat soy—to also eat meat).
  6. Soy is loaded with the isoflavones genistein and daidzeinIsoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen, which is a plant compound resembling human estrogen. These compounds mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen, and have been found to have adverse effects on various human tissues. Soy phytoestrogens are known to disrupt endocrine function, may cause infertility, and may promote breast cancer in women.Drinking even two glasses of soymilk daily for one month provides enough of these compounds to alter your menstrual cycle. Although the FDA regulates estrogen-containing products, no warnings exist on soy.
  7. Soy has toxic levels of aluminum and manganeseSoybeans are processed (by acid washing) in aluminum tanks, which can leach high levels of aluminum into the final soy product. Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than is found in human breast milk.
  8. Soy infant formula puts your baby’s health at risk. Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby’s sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day.Infants fed soy formula have up to 20,000 times the amount of estrogen in circulation as those fed other formulas!

There is also the issue of pesticides and genetic modification.

Soy foods are both heavily sprayed with pesticides and genetically modified (GM). More than 80 percent of the soy grown in the United States is GM. And more than 90 percent of American soy crops are GM.

Since the introduction of GM foods in 1996, we’ve had an upsurge in low birth weight babies, infertility, and other problems in the U.S. population, and animal studies thus far have shown devastating effects from consuming GM soy.

You may want to steer clear of soy products for no other reason than a commitment to avoiding GM foods… unless you wish to be a lab animal for this massive uncontrolled experiment by the biotech industry.

Do you have allergies or food sensitivities you don’t know about?

I dream of a world that is green and mountainous with pastures and animals roaming freely. A land where I am not being exposed to chemicals and toxic substances and where my kids are allergy free.  Somewhere I can pick an apple from a tree and eat it without worrying about pesticides.

It’s a dream I have had for a long time ever since we were privileged to live abroad and experience nature and its beauty right in our back yard.  I hope to have our own land one day and live from the earth, but until then I guess I will have to settle for my travel magazine and sip my cup of tea while I look at a beautiful photographed scene of Gods wonderful creation.

Anyways, now that I am done sulking, let’s get to what I was really supposed to be writing about -which is the topic of allergies.

So many of us have allergies yet we go undiagnosed and suffer from all kinds of ailments and have no idea that they are being caused by allergies.

For instance, did you know that allergies can trigger, mimic and contribute to the following problems?

Chronic ear infections

Diabetes

Eczema and psoriasis

Fibromyalgia

Sinusitis

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Headaches

Pain on the body

Heartburn

Allergies can make many existing problems worse, initiate or trigger several disorders and create symptoms that mimic many common symptoms present in a long list of disorders.

Health Products: Hot Hot Hot List of 3 things you should know about

When you’re a parent that’s interested in natural alternatives and supplements its always good to have some unbiased reviews of products before you purchase them.  So being that I have created my own supplements and health products database with  my own reviews I wanted to share 3 things with you that our family has found to be very helpful.

These are my own reviews and just for the record; La Chica Organica does not receive any monetary compensation for reviewing these products.  I review and recommend only those products I know to work and that our family has used over the years.  I also make it a point to research the manufacturers and ensure they have good manufacturing principles amongst other things.

So without further adieu here is my hot 3 list:

New Chapter’s Probiotic Colon Live Probiotics for Healthy Bowel Function. Probiotic Colon’s capsules contain Fermented Soy and are Naturally Gluten Free. Probiotics with a Purpose™ Probiotic Colon ™ contains ten strains of live probiotics cultured together on a non-dairy food medium containing growth-stimulating prebiotic whole foods: organic okra, organic spinach, organic chlorella, organic blueberry, organic cumin, and organic ginger.

We all love this product and have been using it for years.  Probiotics according to Dr. Weil are products containing the helpful bacteria that normally inhabit the human digestive tract. In the intestinal tract, these beneficial microbes help complete the digestive process, and some actually produce vitamins. There’s even evidence that without them, the immune system can’t work properly, lessening resistance to infection.   At home we take this probiotic on a daily basis as it helps with digestion, indigestion, gas, and proper bowel function.  It has to be kept in the fridge and can be used by children just give them half the adult dose.

Aloe Gold Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Juice Concentrate - I can’t say enough about this product.  It was a key part of healing my husbands GERD and other digestive issues.  Benefits include help with digestion and absorption when taken before meals, energy, Immune System Support, Anti-Inflamatory support for the tissues and joints, Allergies, Liver Support, Bowell distress, skin.  This is another product that our entire family uses with success.  I have used it on more than one occasion when dealing with severe indigestion and bloating.

Xlear Nasal Wash – This is another product I can’t say enough about.  Everyone from baby to daddy uses this wash.  Why it’s so effective in my opinion is because its key ingredient is Xylitol, a natural carbohydrate which occurs freely in certain plant parts.  Studies indicate that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that often cause ear infections in children hence its anti-bacterial properties.  We use this all throughout the year alongside our regular salt water nasal wash.  I have found these drops for your nose to kill the bacteria that causes most infections and colds and I use this several times a day when we are dealing with a bacterial infection and during cold season.

In the future I will be adding more hot review items to help you in your journey of finding good wholesome products.

Help I am sick and I’m Miserable – Part 3

In the first two parts of this 3 part series I focused on natural ways to rid yourself or your children of lice, a nasty sty, congestion depression and a cold.  I also covered migraines and toxic black mold.  I gave you a long list of direct symptoms related to black mold exposure.  You can see part one here and part two here.

Part three I wanted to cover some very useful products and things I use in our home when certain ailments arise.   So I am going to list some ailments and alongside I will list what we use.

Earaches/Infection – We use 2 to 4 drops of Garlic and Mullein leaf Oil dropped in both ears then I gently massage around the earlobe in addition to tugging it gently.  You can make the garlic oil by putting a few cloves of garlic in a warm olive oil in a pan on low for a few minutes until the oils of the garlic is released. Then you strain off the garlic and place in a dropper bottle.  If you just can’t manage this then a great product we use when in a hurry is MULLEIN/GARLIC COMPOUND (Ear Drops) by Herb Pharm.  This is one of the better compounds as none of the herbs are fumigated or irradiated.  This compound contains:

Calendula flower (Calendula officinalis)
St. John’s Wort flower (Hypericum perforatum)
Mullein flower (Verbascum olympicum)
Garlic bulb (Allium sativum)

Cuts, abrasions, all types of burns (thermal, sun, radiation, and chemical burns), frostbite, trauma and bruises, ulcerations and erosions, diaper rash, contact dermatitis, aged and weathered skin, chapped skin and lips, hemorrhoids, irritation or injury of labial and vaginal tissues, traumatized eyes – Another great Herb Pharm product that I keep one in my purse usually and one at home.  This stuff is fantastic and has many curative properties.  Its important to first clean the affected area before applying.  This lovely salve contains:

Comfrey root (Symphytum officinale)
Calendula flower (Calendula officinalis)
Chickweed herb (Stellaria media)
Plantain leaf (Plantago lanceolata)
Mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus)
St. John’s Wort flowering tops (Hypericum perforatum)

Childhood anxiety/stress/panic attacks – When an accident occurs and there is obvious trauma or when my little girl goes into freak out mode because she is stressed out we use Bach Flower Essences Bach Rescue Remedy Kids.  I find this is a great, safe herbal treatment without the side effects and risks of prescription meds that in recent years are proving to be more and more harmful for children especially those meds that cause suicidal tendencies and withdrawal.  I use the adult night version as well occasionally to help me fall asleep as it works wonderfully.

Nose stuffiness/allergies/itchy throat – With all the recalls on products I seldom purchase anything in the drugstore anymore.  For allergies we use Natra-Bio Homeopathics Children’s Allergy.  For nasal congestion, stuffiness and itchy scratchy throat we use Xlear Nasal Wash by Xlear.  We always buy the 3 pack to save since we know it’s something we will use year round.  These drops have been on the market for many years.  I first discovered them about 4 years ago.  They work just like saline nasal drops.

Now most of these ailments can be prevented by modifying our diets (which I will cover in another article) but since we are human and not mechanical robots we do tend to slack off and get sick or hurt every once in a while.  So when you’re super human body breaks down you will have some healthy options. :)

I was planning to stop at Part 3 but I have more natural remedies I will share with you in part 4, so check back soon.
