Make your Own Organic & Toxin Free Mosquito Repellent

Summer is here and for us it means getting bit by mosquitoes.  Unfortunately our kids all swell up pretty badly after getting a mosquito bite.  When that happens we always use Mom’s Miraculous Salve.  But to prevent those pesky little critters from biting, we make up a quick batch of Bite be Gone using distilled water, Organic Hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon) essential oil, organic geranium essential oil and Organic Aloe Vera Extract.

Making it is simple.  Just take an empty spray bottle that has been washed.  For a bottle of about 4 ounces, use 3 ounces of organic witch hazel (alcohol free is best for children), 1/2 ounce of organic aloe vera extract and about 10 to 15  drops of Hierba Luisa essential oil and 5 drops of Geranium essential oil.  Apply the cover then stash away in your purse or bag for your next trip outside.

Make sure you shake the bottle before using each time and re-apply every 2 to 3 hours since the solution is all natural and it does not last long as toxic commercial products. if you exercise or get wet reapply every hour.   I use a water based formula when I am making it for the kids but as you know oil and water don’t mix well so you have to shake the bottle and spray it on immediately.

When I am making it for us adults or when the kids don’t mind being a bit on the oily side I use one of these organic ingredients as a base.

  • olive oil
  • sunflower oil
  • almond oil
  • vodka

As always exercise caution as some people may be allergic to essential oils.  Never spray or use essential oils by your eyes or mouth.

Enjoy!  Hope you have a blessed Summer!

Also, catnip leaves is supposedly good as a repellent, 3x as effective as toxic DEET.
