This morning I was feeling a little bit under the weather so my hubby made an organic green smoothie for us and handed me mine in a large 20 ounce glass. Our little one was bouncing on my lap and lunged for my smoothie almost toppling it over.
People think I lie when I tell them that the kids drink anywhere from 1 to 3 green smoothies a day. Especially when baby sports green colored juice in his sippy cup. The first thing I hear is “yuck, what is that.”
But green smoothies are very important for everyone especially children. Greens help build the immune system, improve digestion, beautify the skin, gently cleanse, provide essential nutrients, minerals, living enzymes and vitamins that your body needs to function properly. These past few years (during the week) we have opted for nutritious herbal, green and fruit smoothies instead of breakfast. This is the very opposite of what most people do today. It’s unfortunate that for decades people have thought that eating a large breakfast full of refined carbs and sugars was a good thing. But it’s not correct for a few reasons. The most important reason is that when you get up in the morning your body should begin the purging process to get rid of all the food you ate the day before. Your digestive system wants to evacuate but you just shove more processed food into it which is like putting your finger over the end of a hose that is turned on. The only thing you’re accomplishing is a lethal buildup of toxins that will be reabsorbed internally and begin to make you sick over time.
So be sure to “raise your glass” and let it be green! Your body will thank you.
Here is my simple recipe for making a 100% organic green smoothie that is baby and kid approved, although some adults may make a face or two!
2 cups Organic Coconut Milk or Almond Milk cold
¾ cup organic frozen mangoes
1 organic banana
½ teaspoon of organic coconut oil
1 teaspoon of organic wheatgrass powder by Amazing Grass
½ cup of organic romaine lettuce mix (washed)
1 teaspoon of organic chlorophyll
2 or 3 organic raw dates for added sweetness
Place all the ingredients in your blender in the same order mentioned above. Blend until smooth and enjoy.
Be sure to sport your green mustache with your kids, they’ll think its cool!
May the green be with you ™

I have been writing about coconut oil for a long time. We have used organic raw extra virgin coconut oil for everything from chicken, to beauty treatments and in smoothies. I have also witnessed its amazing qualities for sustained weight loss. But now the medical community is finally jumping on the bandwagon and talking about it benefits, something the natural health community has known for years. But it’s never to late!
Here is a recent 2 part series video that Dr Oz made on the benefits of Coconut Oil. You can view part 1 it by Clicking here and part 2 by clicking here.
And just in case you want written information on why you should have coconut oil; here are some amazing Coconut facts courtesy of Coconut Secret:
If you’re anything like me, you prefer the basic facts highlighted for you in bullet point fashion ~ everything important you need to know about the naturally occurring health benefits of coconut tree products. So, I’ll get right to it!
- Helps Prevent Obesity by speeding up metabolism, providing an immediate source of energy with fewer calories than other fats. People who consistently use coconut products, report a stronger ability to go without eating for several hours with no affects of hypoglycemia.
- Improves Heart Health by providing healthy short chain and medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) that are essential to good h
ealth. Close to 98% of all fatty acids consumed are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA), which are very different from MCFA that have no negative effect on cholesterol ratios and help to lower the risk of atherosclerosis and protect against heart disease. Studies have shown that populations in Polynesia and Sri Lanka, where coconuts are a dietary staple, do not suffer from high serum cholesterol or heart disease. Unlike other fats, the unique properties of coconut also contain a large amount of lauric acid, which is the predominant fatty acid found in mother’s milk.
- High in Dietary Fiber rivaling other fiber sources such as psyllium, wheat bran, oat bran, and rice bran. Coconut supplies an impressive 61% dietary fiber! Foods contain two types of carbohydrates – digestible and non-digestible. Digestible carbohydrates (soluble fiber) consists of starch and sugar and promote calories. Non-digestible carbohydrates (insoluble fiber) contains NO calories. Since the body cannot digest the dietary fiber in coconut, no calories are derived from it and it has no effect on blood sugar.
- Low Glycemic Index (GI) measures how fast available carbohydrates in food raise blood sugar levels. Coconut fiber slows down the release of glucose, therefore requiring less insulin to utilize the glucose and transport it into the cell where it is converted into energy. Coconut also assists in relieving stress on the pancreas and enzyme systems of the body, in turn, reducing the risks associated with Diabetes. Coconut Nectar and Crystals have a very low GI of only 35 (compared to honey with a GI of 55-83, and sugar with a GI of 65-100.)
- Reduces Sweet Cravings and improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose. The healthy fat in coconut slowsdown any rise in blood sugar and helps to reduce hypoglycemic cravings.
- Improves Digestion and many of the symptoms and inflammatory conditions associatedwith digestive and bowel disorders, by supporting absorption of other nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids while also providing beneficial dietary fiber.
- Quick Energy Boost that provides a super nutritious source of extra energy. Coconut is utilized by the body to actually produce energy, rather than to store it as body fat. It supports improved endurance during physical and athletic performance. As well, it promotes healthy thyroid function and helps to relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue.
- In addition, coconut contains No Trans-Fats, is Gluten-Free, Non-Toxic, Hypoallergenic, and also contains Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antifungal, and Anti-parasitic healing properties. Coconut helps to aid and support overall Immune System functions.
Coconut Oil does not contain Trans-Fats, is Gluten-Free, Non-Toxic, Hypoallergenic, and contains Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antifungal, and Anti-parasitic healing properties. Coconut helps to aid and support overall Immune System functions.
La Chica Organica loves organic raw coconut oil, it’s the favored ingredient in many of my signature dishes, herbal remedies and facial treatments. Here are some LCO CocoCrazy™ uses for coconut oil:
Coconut Curry Chicken – I cook the chicken in coconut milk, coconut oil, curry and garlic. Brown the chicken first using a tablespoon of coconut oil then lower and simmer in coconut milk, curry and garlic. You can add another spoon of coconut oil if you like. For another great coconut chicken recipe click here.
Pina Colada Smoothie – We use frozen pineapples, bananas, raw milk or coconut milk, organic raw honey and a teaspoon of coconut oil per 4 cups of fluid. Blend and you have your self a delicious smoothie.
Raw chocolate Chip pancakes – You can use sprouted grains or regular organic flour and add in your carob or cacao chips. Use coconut oil as needed. Place on the electric skillet or in oven making sure not to heat above 118 degrees.
Coconut Hair & Body Treatment – use organic unrefined coconut oil in your hair as a moisturizer treatment and on rough dry skin. It’s fantastic and smells like you’re on an island. I use it one or twice a month in my hair and on my scalp.
Herbs for Cough and Lung Problems

My sister just stopped by in a panic because my 5-year-old niece was coughing non stop all day and she suffers from asthma. She has been working on changing their diet and determining her triggers but for today she wanted me to mix up something quick and effective to help my niece stop coughing.
My sister told me that my niece was doing breathing treatments with Albuterol and Pulmicort and her asthmatic coughing was as persistent as ever. Now, these meds have a place in our world when absolutely necessary and in an emergency but they are not a cure-all. The Albuterol is a bronchodilator while the Pulmicort is an inhaled steroid. Both Albuterol and Pulmicort are medications used to treat asthma, however Albuterol is short acting and reserved for acute symptoms management. Pulmicort is a medication taken daily in an attempt to suppress the symptoms of asthma and therefore reduce the need to use Albuterol. Both have serious side effects worth reading about, so research them if you use this medication.
When my first son was smaller he took many doses of both of these meds to no avail in addition to several other prescriptions. He got worse and ended up in the hospital or doctor’s office weekly. It was not until I started studying everything in detail and determining his triggers and also treating his stomach and food allergies that his condition started to get better.
But in my sister’s case she had done everything her pediatrician advised and my little niece was still coughing away.
So I whipped up a quick herbal goodie bag of La Chica Organica”s Cough Control Tea which has fennel. ginger, fenugreek and mullein. I also gave her 30 drops of organic cayenne extract, 15 drops of my lemon balm extract and 3 drops of super strong oil of oregano. The trick was getting this screaming coughing child to down less than an ounce of this spicy stuff that I mixed with juice. She kicked and screamed, we bribed her with candy and she gave in. The funny thing is that in our home everyone including out 17 month old has done some form of Cayenne shots and there is rarely a scream or kick from them although we sometimes jump up and down and make faces. But we have gotten use to it and I started them early so now its as common as drinking a glass of water, although my oldest son sometimes freaks out, we usually handle the heat quite well.
The cool thing is that my niece’s cough stopped immediately and I sent my sister home with enough herbs to make a few cups of tea and some herbal cough drops. I also advised her to add some raw crushed garlic to her tea.
But I must say that not all coughs are the same so its important that you pay attention and seek medical advise to determine the cause of the cough as a serious cough can be a sign of bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, post nasal drainage, allergies and more.
If you are wondering why I chose some of the herbs mentioned for my nieces cough; here is some helpful information about their medicinal properties:
Fenugreek – The seed part of fenugreek is a mucilaginous herb with affinity for the lymphatic and respiratory systems. It is an excellent herb to use for conditions involving excess mucus or phlegm such as asthma. It has bitter principles, saponins, which have a dissolving and loosening properties, which may explain why it has been used to dissolve thick or hardened mucus and aid in its expulsion from the body. It may help expel toxic waste from the lymphatic system as mucus secretions come from the lymphatic system. Mucilage is also helpful in the digestive process.
Garlic has been used for centuries for its antibiotic and its ability to help with dry coughs. One significant advantage of garlic is that the bacteria do not seem to build up a resistance to it as they do to many modern antibiotics; “garlic does not seem to produce such resistant strains”. This also makes it potentially effective against hospital superbugs. To make an effective garlic syrup just mince a clove of garlic and place in a small bowl; cover with honey and cover the bowl with plastic wrap; marinate overnight then strain off the garlic and place honey in a jar. Take one tablespoonful upon awakening, then throughout the day, as needed. This can also be done by using red onion and garlic for colds, flu and coughs.
Fennel is an aromatic herb, especially useful for stimulating the digestive process. It has a long history of use in helping to overcome colic, gas and other digestive disturbances. These oils appear to stimulate the lungs to eliminate phlegm. This is known as an expectorant action. Fennel also has diuretic properties. Historically, it has been used in cases of persistent coughs and bronchitis. It is also reported to have anti-convulsive properties.
Mullein is one of the major herbs used for lung problems. It appears to have the ability to loosen mucus and move it out of the body. It also appears to nourish and strengthen the lung tissue making it useful for all respiratory problems and pulmonary diseases. Mullein has been used to help reduce swelling in the lymph nodes as well.

It’s very sad to see tragedy hit so quickly and without warning. Such a tragedy occurred today in New Zealand.
Per CNN a 6.3-magnitude quake struck one of New Zealand’s largest cities during the lunchtime rush. Frantic rescuers scrambled to reach those trapped beneath the rubble hours after the earthquake hit. Dazed, bleeding residents wandered through streets strewn with debris and piles of concrete.
La Chica Organica has many readers and subscribers from New Zealand and today, I wanted to express my love, support and prayers for those affected by this quake.
For more info on the quake click here.
Blessings.
