GM Corn not only Toxic for Our Body but for the Earth

Did you know that in 2009, more than 85 percent of American corn crops were genetically modified to either repel pests or to be tolerant to herbicides used to kill weeds in a cultivated field.  This is the corn your buying and ingesting every time you purchase regular catchup, cookies, snacks, yogurt and many other foods.

Why, well because High Fructose Corn Syrup is made using the Genetically Modified Corn that is so cheap to produce.  It’s so cheap that now that’s all we (US) feed the farm animals.  For more on this and the detriments of GM crops for your health please click here to watch a free movie that will revolutionize the way you eat and shop.

So not only are these crops a detriment to our health but now they are polluting our rivers and streams across the US.  Check out the article below.

GM maize ‘has polluted rivers across the United States’

An insecticide used in genetically modified (GM) crops grown extensively in the United States and other parts of the world has leached into the water of the surrounding environment.

The insecticide is the product of a bacterial gene inserted into GM maize and other cereal crops to protect them against insects such as the European corn borer beetle. Scientists have detected the insecticide in a significant number of streams draining the great corn belt of the American mid-West.

The researchers detected the bacterial protein in the plant detritus that was washed off the corn fields into streams up to 500 metres away. They are not yet able to determine how significant this is in terms of the risk to either human health or the wider environment.

“Our research adds to the growing body of evidence that corn crop byproducts can be dispersed throughout a stream network, and that the compounds associated with genetically modified crops, such as insecticidal proteins, can enter nearby water bodies,” said Emma Rosi-Marshall of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York.

GM crops are widely cultivated except in Britain and other parts of Europe. In 2009, more than 85 per cent of American corn crops were genetically modified to either repel pests or to be tolerant to herbicides used to kill weeds in a cultivated field.

The GM maize, or corn as it is called in the US, has a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuriengensis (Bt) inserted into it to repel the corn borer beetle. The Bt gene produces a protein called Cry1Ab which has insectidical properties.

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, analysed 217 streams in Indiana. The scientists found 86 per cent of the sites contained corn leaves, husks, stalks or cereal cobs in their channels and 13 per cent contained detectable levels of the insectidical Cry1Ab proteins.

“The tight linkage between corn fields and streams warrants further research into how corn byproducts, including Cry1Ab insecticidal proteins, potentially impact non-target ecosystems, such as streams and wetlands,” Dr Rosi-Marshall said.

All of the stream sites with detectable insecticidal proteins were located within 500 metres of a corn field. The ramifications are vast just in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana, where about 90 per cent of the streams and rivers – some 159,000 miles of waterways – are also located within 500 metres of corn fields.

After corn crops are harvested, a common agricultural practice is to leave discarded plant material on the fields. This “no-till” form of agriculture minimises soil erosion, but it then also sets the stage for corn byproducts to enter nearby stream channels.

How to bring down a Fever Naturally

Did you know you can use herbal baths to help assist fever in adults, young children and babies?  There are several herbs like chamomile that contain properties that promote perspiration which in turn cools the body down resulting in a lowering of the fever.

You can prepare 1 or 2 quarts of chamomile infusion by using one well-rounded teaspoon of dried chamomile for each cup (8oz) of water.  Pour the boiling water over the herbs, cover and let steep for 30 minutes.  Strain off the herbs and pour into warm bath water.

You can also sponge bathe a young child with the warm infusion if you don’t want to put them in the bathtub.  However never keep sponging your baby with fever once shivering begins. You should stop immediately as shivering increases body heat and can lead to a seizure.

This infusion of Chamomile can also be given orally to children at a rate of 1/4 a cup every 2 hours until fever comes down and then continue to give 3 times a day for 2 to 3 days after fever is gone to aid the body in its recuperation.   I use a dropper for babies since they are not likely to drink from a cup when sick.  Adults can enjoy a cup of chamomile tea every 3 to 4 hours during fever until it comes down.

La Chica Organica sells a fantastic mix of organic herbs called Herbal Fever Assist Bath & Tea™ that can be made into a bath and a tea to assist the body during a fever.

Food Safety Accountability Act of 2010 – Do You Know Whats Up?

Why Patrick Leahy’s Food Safety Accountability Act of 2010 Must Be Stopped

patrick-leahyLast week we told you about [1] the threat posed by Sen. Leahy’s new bill. This week we want to explain how important it is that all of us take action—immediately.

The first problem, as we noted in our original piece, is that the bill calls for a jail term of up to ten years [2] for any food or supplement producer who “misbrands” a product. Excuse us, but what does misbranding have to do with food safety? Is this another example of Congress not wanting a good crisis (recent food contamination) to go to waste? To this bill’s credit, it is short and more-or-less understandable. So why does it wander off the food safety subject almost at once?

And keep this important point in mind: the FDA contends that any food or supplement producer who mentions the potential of a product to prevent or treat disease is guilty of misbranding—even if they have piles and piles of scientific research from Harvard or some other top institution. So this bill would create a potential ten-year jail term simply for citing the best science.

The FDA will use this new stick to intimidate, harass, and unfairly punish. The word “misbranding” has no place in this bill. It vastly increases FDA power over food and supplement producers without enhancing food safety in any way.

The second problem is that this bill defines contamination as “adulteration.” But the legal definition of “adulteration,” like “misbranding,” is highly technical, and the FDA’s current definition of adulteration includes minor and unintended administrative and clerical errors.

The third problem is that the bill is sloppily written, which can be dangerous when the time comes to enforce the law. Placement of the key word “knowingly” is ambiguous: does the long jail term apply to those who “knowingly introduce” the product into commerce, or to those who “knowingly adulterate” it? On top of that, the bill seems to apply to someone who sells a contaminated product, but not to someone who contaminates it in the first place if not a distributor.

The original House food safety bill [3] included these kind of jail sentences. The Senate HELP Committee rejected them, and we were assured by key senators that the Senate would not allow them to be added in conference with the House. The new Leahy bill attempts to make an end-run around the HELP Committee by getting the Senate on the record as being in favor of these jail terms for misbranding and adulteration. If the Leahy bills passes, it will likely be combined with the Senate food safety bill, and the final conference bill will then almost certainly contain the long jail terms.

As with the recent McCain bill, it is very possible that Sen. Leahy does not fully understand what his bill is doing. It is also possible that the impetus for the Leahy bill may have come from Congressman Waxman in the House, but this is speculation.

What particularly concerns us at the moment is that the Senate might pass this dreadful legislation right away before leaving on October 7 to go campaign. That’s why we need everyone to take action without delay.

If you have not done so already, PLEASE write to your senators immediately and ask them to stop this bill! Take action now! [4]
